Perfect Dark is a conspicuously aged game many years older it seems, than Halo, and somehow even older than the less ambitious but more solid GoldenEye from four years earlier. It was a special game, not least because it was GoldenEye’s only real sequel and a fond farewell to a console we loved. Every N64 owner has their own Perfect Dark story – the pre-orders, the lengths they went to get a copy on release day, the expense of the expansion pack, the gunfights with friends, unlocking every last cheat.
Every minute of the summer of 2000 was spent locked in four-player deathmatches with friends and conquering that campaign. It’s an irresistible package for anyone who was playing games at the time it’s the chance to return to a world in which we lived.

This is Perfect Dark: the same 20-level campaign, the same brilliant sci-fi weapons, the same stirring tunes, and the same massively complete multiplayer mode with split-screen and bots and now full online functions. This then is Perfect Dark the way it was meant to be played and the way it existed in our heads – smooth, clear, and razor-sharp. The last truly great N64 game was too ambitious for the console to handle, but we loved it despite the creaking tech powering it – and somehow those framerates and smeary textures never registered as a problem. Hopefully we'll see demos of Dead or Alive 4 and Ridge Racer 6 to keep us going before they're released in the UK in January.Of course, the N64 could barely run Perfect Dark the way it was either – even with the RAM booster pack it chugged along at about 20 frames per second and dropped to single figures if anyone dared make anything explode.

If you're signed using the free Xbox 360 online service, you can now treat yourself to demos of Condemned and Quake 4, although at around 600MB each, they'll take a while to fit down your broadband pipe. The multiplayer online game lets you throw bots into the action, and there's even a Counter-Strike mode called Dark Ops where you earn money to spend on armour and weapons. The best thing is that you can even do this online, teaming up with someone else from around the world, communicating via the headset and not having to share your screen with them.
This is a game that gets better the more players you add to it, and the main story is even better when played though co-operatively. While the single player game is good, the multiplayer features make this a must-buy if you have Xbox Live Gold membership. There are even defensive gun turrets, one gun that projects a holographic version of yourself (a female version of James Bond in skintight clothing), and one pistol that makes enemies go crazy and start firing at each other. This is a game that puts hi-tech combat first - weapons are futuristic but realistic, and most of them have a secondary or even tertiary fire mode. The public expectation for Perfect Dark Zero was for it to be nothing short of Halo 3, and while it doesn't reach Bungie's level of perfection, Perfect Dark Zero is still a showcase for the new console. And lucky old Crave: we managed to score an Xbox 360 Premium Package with Perfect Dark Zero on Christmas Eve, meaning we're one of the lucky few to actually be playing the game in all its high definition glory.
